Although the lyrics were written separately over a 4 month period, Automaton is something of a concept album when taken as a whole. I wanted the lyrics to primarily deal with a certain subject matter, which is why it took a while to complete by our standards - the lyrics were the hardest part because of the necessity to interconnect the themes. That being said, it's an admittedly dark record. But that should not imply that I was in a necessarily dark place when writing it. On the contrary, I had a fun time writing and recording the album, and with a few exceptions, the album is not necessarily a reflection of how I was feeling at the time. It just ended up being that way, the theme seemed predestined, and it seemed as if I or we were just the vehicles through which it came out.
